The Deck; Tuesday Mid-Morning [05/22].

Astrid was very deliberately, very intentionally not going to her Zoology workshop today. She'd given the matter a lot of thought...too much thought, really...and she'd even spent hours trying to work it out through sketches, dozens of recreations of the fantastic barren landscape presented to them last week. But she still couldn't untangle the knot that Jenkins's words had put in her stomach, especially once she realized she was in a situation where she really couldn't win. Still, she figured, if he was going to act like it was such a bad thing that she only came to class because she was expected to, then she was stubborn enough to just not go. Which was ironic, because she actually did want to go now. Not for the class itself, but just to see what incredible world the Danger Shop would present them with that week. She'd gotten so much inspiration out of that last one that a restless part of her desperately wanted to go and soak up another one, but, no, she'd made up her mind, she wasn't going, maybe she'd go next week, but she hadn't decided and if she did go, it would just be for the artistic inspiration.

So she returned to the dorms after Arts & Crafts, went up to her room to snag a book, and then went down to the deck to have a seat and do some reading instead. But she grabbed one of Tip's recommendations from the pile she'd borrowed from the library instead of one of the titles on her mother's extensive reading list, because, apparently, once she started rebelling, she could clearly not be contained.

The sky looked like it might be threatening rain, but Astrid was willing to hedge her bets. She was too anxious to stay cooped up inside, and she might even decide to go wandering through town again after a few chapters if the restlessness kept up. But she very much, very pointedly, intended to stay right here and read at least for the duration of second period. What was the worst that could happen? They'd kick her out? She mostly hated it here, anyway. She'd probably mostly hate it anywhere they sent her, so it didn't really matter, did it?
