Third floor common room: Very early Wednesday morning

Coraline had woken early, much to her annoyance.

Not wanting to disturb Lucas, she'd put her robe on over her pyjamas, slipped on her slippers (yes, they were shaped like purple rabbits. She'd insisted) and went down to the common room.

She poured herself a bowl of cereal and curled up on the couch under a blanket, remote control in hand, switching through the channels.

Shawn wandered in, cereal bar in hand, and flopped onto a chair. "Morning, person I don't think I know," he said in greeting.

He is really far too awake for this early.

"Good morning," Coraline replied, thinking he seemed far too awake for this hour. "And I don't know you. I'm Coraline. Coraline Jones."

"M' Shawn," he said, speaking through his mouthful of food. He did at least have the manners to put a hand to his mouth as he did so, though.

"Nice to meet you," he added once he'd finished.

"Nice to meet you, Shawn," she replied, then nodded at the television. "You have an awful lot of stations here. Way more than we have back home."

Shawn nodded as he finished off another mouthful. He could never be accused of not eating enough.

"It's more, even, than I usually have at home, and we have cable," he told her. "I think we get extra cause of... y'know, this place."

"Oh." She looked at the television, then back at Shawn. "Magic television?" she asked. "From other dimensions?"

That would explain some of the things she'd seen so far.

"Only explanation I can come up with," Shawn replied. "You'd figure, really, with the different people we get around here, we'd get freaky television."

"It's kinda fun," he added. "Makes channel surfing a whole lot more interesting."

Coraline smiled, looking very satisfied. "We only had six channels where I lived, and all of the really interesting shows were on after I went to bed," she said. "I think that television watching will be a lot more exciting here."

"The other great thing?" Shawn said, grinning at her. "There are days without class, where you can stay up as laaate as you want."

"Well, technically, I suppose you could do that on days you had class the next day," he amended. "But I don't think it's advised."

It had never ocurred to her that she could go to bed whenever she wanted, and she wondered why. "I think I'm going to stay up all night one night, just because I can," she decided. "But not when I have a class the next day. I could make popcorn and pizza and stay up watching movies for the whole night."

"A very good plan," Shawn agreed. "People really don't get enough out of the 'no curfew' thing around here. Someone needs to bring back movie marathon nights. When I first came here, that's pretty much what I thought boarding school was about."

"I've been here for five days, and this morning," she said, counting thee up in her head. "And it feels longer than that to me. Maybe time's different here."

"Tends to be for some, and not for others," Shawn said with a shrug. "Because when I go home, exactly the right amount of time has still gone by... But people have been known to vanish for weeks, and have two years go by."

"I don't think you're supposed to understand anything like that around here."
