Magic/Support Reserves: Preserve near the Cabins, after workshops

Today, there was something missing. Something whose absence made everything about this meeting of the Magic Slash Support Reserves desperately, desperately wrong.

No, not everybody with magic powers; nobody was invisible today. This was so much worse: the table next to the leaders held NO FOOD! It held nothing but a pile of scarves, in fact.

"Now, now, nobody panic," Emmett called out, raising his hands in a slightly defensive movement just in case they were really as hungry as they looked. "The goodies are here. They're just behind us." He stepped aside to point to a spot a good hundred feet back, where another table could be spotted. "You guys did really well with helping each other out when things went kabloonkie last week, so this week, we're gonna build on that with a teamwork and communication exercise. Which I'd be the first to call lametastic under other circumstances, but guys, guys. There's cupcakes at the end of it!"

"So." He pointed to the open area of grass between the food and the group leaders. "Today? That grass is lava. There's a path through it marked out in duct tape, but you can't step off or bye-bye designer footwear which by the way I hope you didn't wear. Go to the end of the path, grab yourself a cupcake for you and one for your partner, and then make your way back! Easy like peas!"

"Well, maybe not quite that easy," Karla said, grinning a bit. "See, the reason you need a partner is because you're going to be blindfolded." One of the scarves on the table floated over to her and she held it up for them to see. "Trust and communication, remember? You're going to have to trust your partner to get you to the cupcakes, without having you step in lava, or in any of the other ingenious traps we've set about the course." The expression Karla was wearing suggested that she was looking forward to seeing them maneuver said traps.

"The easiest way to do this is via verbal communication, of course, but be creative if you can. Pair up with a telepath and have them look through your eyes or attempt to broadcast your thoughts, especially if you're unused to telepathic communication. Use magic to somehow guide your partner through--and then don't use any for yourself. Levitate someone over the lava if they're about to fall in. Be creative and go beyond your comfort zone. Nothing is against the rules, as long as you have fun."

"If I pair up with you, can I have your cupcake as well?" Diana asked, walking over.
furnaceface: (Told you so)

//Well, I'm not going to eat it,// Jono allowed, nodding a greeting as Diana approached. //Have you got any preference as to which role you'll be playing, here?//

Diana shrugged. "It would be easier for you to give me instructions, but I can alter things to move you out of danger so...your choice? You are giving up your cupcake after all."
furnaceface: (Casual conversation)

It wasn't really as though Jono was going to miss the cupcake, either. But then, giving her his share probably meant that he was somehow paying her back for that one time that she made her cupcake taste like chalk.

He still appreciated that. In a sort of backwards way.

//All I really can do is give directions,// he noted. //My powers aren't really good at much beyond destroying things, and I doubt people would be very appreciative if I were to mangle the pathway. If yer fine with just being talked through, then I don't mind standing here and watching.//

Diana nodded. "All right then, keep me out of the lava!" She said cheerfully and tied a scarf around her eyes. "Ready!"
furnaceface: (Told you so)

//Right, then...// Jono shrugged, and then decided to get right to business. //Take three decent-sized steps forward, and then shimmy to yer right, a little.//

This, fortunately, was the easy part. Just wait until they got to the kittens.

[identity profile] oops-mbad.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Diana took three average steps and the shimmied a bit to the right. "Feel free to tell me what I'm about to run into. If you're allowed to do that."
furnaceface: (Very disappointed in you)

[personal profile] furnaceface 2010-06-03 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
//I don't recall anybody tellin' me I wasn't,// Jono noted, amused. //Now, if you take another two steps forward and feel out with yer toe, there's a step, there. You could probably step over it entirely, easily enough. It isn't terribly high.//

Re: THE GRASS IS LAVA OMG. [Magic/Support 6/2/2010]

[identity profile] oops-mbad.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Diana grinned and took two slightly less than average steps forward and gently kicked out with her right leg until she hit the step. Then there was more shuffling forward and stepping over the step. "I feel silly."
furnaceface: (Told you so)

Re: THE GRASS IS LAVA OMG. [Magic/Support 6/2/2010]

[personal profile] furnaceface 2010-06-03 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
//Not half as silly as you look, I'm certain,// Jono replied, so very reassuringly. //At least you didn't land on yer face or anything, luv.//

Was a second cupcake really worth this, Diana? You poor thing.

//Now take a step forward, turn right, and take another step, hmm?//

"Aw, I feel so much better already." Diana told him cheerfully and took a step forward, turned, and took a step. "Why was there a question mark there?"
furnaceface: (Casual conversation)

//Errant punctuation is what I do, gel. I'm livin' on the edge, really.// Jono shrugged, even if she couldn't see. And then he made his way over in order to inspect the next obstacle. //You'll like this one. Turn left, and then shimmy forward just a little. Then bend over and feel about a bit, perhaps.//

Basket of Kittens of Dubious Reality. What was not to like about it?

Re: THE GRASS IS LAVA OMG. [Magic/Support 6/2/2010]

[identity profile] oops-mbad.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Diana paused and then very cautiously turned left and shimmied forward. However, she didn't bend down and instead chose to poke at the obstacle with her toe again. "Hunh?" She said eloquently before crouching down to poke at it. "It's squishy. Do I need to step over it?"
furnaceface: (Looking Around)

//Probably better'n steppin' on it,// Jono agreed. //It's a basket of kittens.//

Well. Plush kittens.

//We gen'rally approve of people who step over th'kittens, yes.//

Diana glared in his general direction. Well, she glared behind the blindfold. You had to take her word for it. "How big a step do I need to take?"
furnaceface: (Told you so)

[personal profile] furnaceface 2010-06-03 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
//Kitten basket-sized,// Jono replied. And then relented and moved a little closer to inspect again. There had to be an easy solution to this one, right?

//Perhaps... Just take th'biggest step yer can manage, and lift yer feet up high. If you go slowly, I can tell you if yer about to trip over 'em.//

Re: THE GRASS IS LAVA OMG. [Magic/Support 6/2/2010]

[identity profile] oops-mbad.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Diana sighed and raised her right leg as high as she could without falling over and began to lean a bit forward while wobbling. "Slow...enough...?"
furnaceface: (Quick Peek at the Furnace)

Re: THE GRASS IS LAVA OMG. [Magic/Support 6/2/2010]

[personal profile] furnaceface 2010-06-03 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
//Going that slowly's going to land you and th'kittens into the 'lava,'// Jono sighed. //Here, hold yer leg up for a moment more if yer can, and I'll nudge it right close to yer foot so you don't have as far to step.//

See, since she was blindfolded, he didn't feel too put-out by having to pull his bandages down slightly, just enough to let a lick of psionic energy curl out and give that basket a little nudge.

The contents of it squeaked. Aww.

//There, put yer foot down, luv.//

"What's with the squeaking?" Diana asked as she put her foot down and shifted her weight to carry over her other foot as well.
furnaceface: (Eyeroll)

Jono shrugged. Again. While he was working on straightening the bandages over his face again.

//I suppose fake kittens don't care much for being jostled about by psionic flame,// he replied. //Ready to keep going? There's some marshmallow fluff not far along that's dying t'get all over yer shoes.//

"Urgh." Diana said eloquently and took a small shuffling step forward. "How far?"

//Well, turn left first. Don't want to step on the horrifyingly dangerous lawn or anything,// Jono replied, bemused. //Then it's about four or five steps ahead. Take 'em careful, luv. It's right on th'corner, and that'll be a right turn.//

"Oh no, how will I ever survive?" Diana deadpanned. Behind the tree line, a pan fell with a thud on top of a small burrow. Oops. She carefully followed the directions, keeping her steps equal and stopped after turning right.
furnaceface: (Told you so)

//Biiig step, now, and then a sharp turn right,// Jono directed. //The next obstacle is after a bit of winding, but it shouldn't be much of a problem at all, really.//

Diana took a biiiig step and turned. "What is the obsticle?"
