Reserves: Behind the Dorms, Tuesday After Classes

There were a lot of snacks today. A lot. Chips, pastries, pizza, pretzels... not much in the way of candy, though. Funny, that.

Anyway, a lot of snacks, kind of like someone was trying to make up for the lack of a meeting last week, and about double the usual amount of coffee and soft drinks, emphasis on the caffeinated stuff. There was also some sparring gear laid out, because those were two sets of things that clearly went well together.

"So it's finals week," Kennedy began. "I know, I know, not so much with the hardcore study time at this school, but it's another sort of easy week anyway. Especially if some of you guys are still sorta recovering from being little and hyper and doing some wacky things over the weekend. So hey, do some sparring if you guys want to, or kick back and have snacks, sneak in some study time if that's your thing." The 'nerd' tacked onto the end of that sentence was purely implied.

"It's been a good semester, you guys." Oh, she so wasn't going to get sentimental on them here, so she left it at that.

"Try not to get eaten by something in the meantime," Maladicta added helpfully. She was going to stick to the caffeinated stuff after all the... b-word over the weekend.

Egads, Alexander thought to himself as he looked over the offerings of the day, that is a lot of snacks.

He had a handful of pretzels, munching on them, doing a very poor job of putting a dent in diminishing the level of snackitude available to them on this day.

Squall took a few pretzels to snack on, and a can of soda. Snacks were always good.

A lot of snacks were just what Cally could use, thanks. Apparently her younger self had expended enough energy for a person three times her size, this weekend, because Cally was still struggling to catch up.

Far be it for Alexander to pass up the chance for a good spar to keep his mind engaged, but on something that wasn't French or government or any of the other many classes he had. He picked up a practice sword, glancing about for someone who might wish to partner with him.

Squall picked up a practice sword and twirled it. He sized up Alexander and decided he should take a moment to close his eyes and release all of his Junctions. He didn't want to beat the other kid too badly, after all.

The moment of what appeared to be reflection as Squall took up his own sword caught Alexander's attention a little, and he found a grip that his instructor back in Daventry would have at least not have been too disappointed.

"Well, Squall," he said with a grin, hoping that wasn't interrupting any reverie the other gentleman might be having, "might you do the honor of meeting me in a spar?"

A few more moments passed, and then Squall opened his eyes and nodded. "That's what I'm here for." He readied his sword and carefully watched Alexander, examining every move. "Whenever you're ready."

Alexander hoped the attempt to swallow the lump that had lodged itself in his throat wasn't too obvious; clearly, Squall was very intense about his swordwork, and Alexander was starting to doubt the minuscule amount of training he'd received in the past few years. Still, doubt bred inadequacy, and he was determined to at least do...sort of okay.

"Ready," he said, and proved to be so by taking initiative with a swing, coming downward toward the other young man's neck.

It probably helped that Squall was planning to go easy on him.

He blocked Alexander's swing, and then countered with a high, sweeping attack of his own.

Really, that was quite kind of Squall.

Thankfully, things were off to a good enough start; he expected a block and the counter was fairly easy to follow, too, lifting his own sword over his head to meet Squall's and be a handy use of an icon.

Well, it was only fair. If this were a battle of wits, it would be Squall that needed the handicap.

He pulled his sword back and spun all the way around, coming in with a low slice from the other side.

"I've always wondered," Alexander commented, because a swordfight just didn't seem right without some sort of banter or discussion, as he moved to block yet again on the other side, "if spins and the like are really helpful..."

He wasn't going to try a spin as he went to stab toward Squall's side.

"Not usually," Squall answered. "They give the other person too much time to react." He used his sword to push Alexander's away from his side, and kept the swords crossed, trying to push Alexander off-guard.

There was undeniably a little bit of staggering, but Alexander just put his strength into meeting Squall's push. He knew he might not have much in the way of training, but a lifetime of manual labor certainly didn't leave one wanting for strength.

"I suppose," he mused, trying to disguise any effort, "it could work as a distraction as well."

Re: Pair up and spar!

[identity profile] whateverknight.livejournal.com 2011-04-20 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Without his junctions, Squall wasn't going to win in a contest of brute strength. "It could," he grunted, not hiding the effort he was making. "But usually it's just someone trying to be pretentious and show off."

Which wasn't at all the reason he'd done it just then. Honest.

But, truly, he had to have expected Alexander to ask!

"Is that what it was, then?" He grinned, realizing the standstill was going no where and letting go, stepping back as he withdrew his sword. Stepping back, pulling his sword in tight with him and then stepping out toward Squall's hip.

Maladicta was sticking to the shade, drinking her coffee. Neither of those activities could be confused.

Hopefully.
