The Roof; Saturday Evening [ 01/07 ].

Okay, so, it was Saturday night and Britta felt a little lame about the fact that she was up on the roof with nothing better to do than smoke some...cigarettes, but it hardly felt like Friday when you'd basically taken an extended weekend and didn't get back until Wednesday. So she was actually enjoying the chance to just know that there was a good spot in this place for just reflecting and smoking...cigarettes.

From the stash of...tobacco she'd gotten on her little trip. Man. A lot of the guys she smoked with in Riverside claimed there was nothing better than homegrown, but...

"I beg to differ, gentlemen," Britta said to no one in particular after a satisfied inhale and a pleased sigh. "I beg to differ."

"It's completely unlike what I'd read," Elphaba said, partially because she was still thinking it was just a cigarette and nothing beyond that.

She smiled a lot now. "I probably should have said my name," she said. "I'm Elphaba. Elphaba Thropp."

Lurline help her, she giggled after that.

"Head start?" Elphaba said, not following. But then she nodded her head in agreement with Britta. "Or it's stories for so-called children that lie and try to get you to think that witches are evil and deserve to be melted by stupid Kansas farm girls. You really can't trust books all the time."

"In the story," Elphaba explained. "Not in actual Oz." She inhaled again, and again coughed. "It's one of those things that always bothered me about it."

That probably didn't help with helping Britta follow.

Elphaba just sort of looked over at Britta confusedly.

"People set themselves on fire in protest?" she asked.

Even in this state, that sounded like a really bad plan to her.

Elphaba opened her mouth to argue, but decided it would be better to inhale just a bit more from the cigarette.

"I think I have a different sort of dedication," she said.

And then she started staring at her hand. It was the most fascinating thing she'd ever seen her life at that moment.

"Oh, well, I wouldn't want to boast," Elphaba said, still staring at her hand. "I just have dealt with more than a little..."

She started giggling again.

"Have you ever really looked at a hand before?" Elphaba said. "Even if mine's, well... It's green, in case you hadn't noticed. And I thank you for not trying to make fun of it. People tend to do that."

Elphaba looked around Britta, and then about the roof.

"I don't see any pots here," she said, matter-of-factly.

"I thought you said it was a cigarette," Elphaba said, slightly confused. "And I don't know why I'm green. No one seems to know. I was born this way even though neither of my parents were green. Nobody else is green in all of Oz except me."

She sighed a bit, and looked up at the moon.

"...I could really use a vegan cupcake," she said, suddenly very hungry.

"You can do just about anything vegan," Elphaba said. "I don't eat meat, either. And I really don't like industrial farms so I'm a vegan in this world. Poor animals deserve better than how they're treated here."

Elphaba's stomach rumbled.
