Fourth Floor Common Room [Monday late afternoon]

Olive wasn't even feeling especially social or creative. But ever since her class that morning, she'd wanted cookies. And no, she was so not like, a gourmet cook at all, but she could buy refrigerated cookie dough with the best of them.

Shhh. She threw the packaging away and tossed the raw dough into a bowl so no one would know. She was sneaky. There was a batch of cooling chocolate-chip cookies resting on the counter already as she stared at the oven like it might produce state secrets or something. She'd turned on the television, for those who might not be super-into watching cookie dough rise, but she wasn't especially paying attention.

And no, she was not making these cookies for anyone but herself, regardless what certain parties might try to argue. But she'd share, probably. Unless you were obnoxious.

[open, la.]

She shook her head. "Not even remotely," Yeul admitted. "Are you from around here?"

"I'm from this world and close to this time," Mercy explained, "but in some ways, it's very different from home. I grew up way north in Montana - very few people, very cold, lots of woods and wilderness."

And werewolves, just for another W.

"Hmmm." She tilted her head slightly. "That sounds rather like where I'm from. At least, in the sense that there's wilderness everywhere and some places are heavily forested."

"Really?" Mercy said, rather intrigued. "Tell me more about it."

"Well," Yeul said, as she considered what to say, "my world is known as Gran Pulse--Pulse for short--and many of the people are situated in only a few settlements. Our largest city is known as Academia and the majority of humanity lives there. Rather than live there, my Guardian and I tend to drift around the world, always moving from one place to the next so we can often go weeks without meeting another person. It's dangerous, of course, because our world has many monsters, but the beauty of the land rather makes up for that."

"Monsters," Mercy said thoughtfully, wondering if she and the werewolves would fall into that category. Probably. "It must be hard always traveling, alone a lot, without a real home. What brought you here?"

Possibly. Monsters did not have a human's intelligence, after all.

"My Guardian, Caius, thought that the stability would be good for me," she said, with a bit of a shrug. "I enjoyed the traveling, however, so my feelings are rather more mixed."

"I understand having mixed feelings about being here," Mercy said honestly. "I'm starting to think that it's a place I can really fit in, maybe really be just who I am, but... I miss where I grew up so much."

Not that she could go back there but it didn't stop her from being homesick.

"I'm sorry," Yeul said honestly. "The fact that this is a nice place to be doesn't change that sort of thing. Perhaps it will get easier in time? Have you been here long?"

"It already is better," Mercy assured her. "I've been here a little over a year. It's just... well... I can't go home. Not to the place where I grew up."

She shrugged, trying to act as if it didn't bother her as much as it did. "But I have my mom and her family and here, so... it's okay."

"I'm sorry," she said again, wondering why Mercedes couldn't go home and not quite daring to ask. "I cannot say I understand but I do sympathize. There are some things that change, whether you want them to or not."

Mercy nodded. "You just have to make the best of what you have and move on." She was doing better with that this year for sure.

Yeul brightened. "Yes," she agreed, nodding. "And once you begin that, it slowly becomes easier until it's not nearly so hard."

She had plenty of experience. Plenty.

"Exactly," Mercy said, smiling at her. "The more you work at it, the easier it gets."

Yeul's smile was just a touch wistful. "Do you think, eventually, it'll be so easy that it can be done without thinking?"

Mercy's smile was equally wistful. "I hope so."
