Second Floor Common Room - Friday Morning

It had been a while since Guillermo had cooked anything but he had promised Graham that he would make a range of empanadas for him to try and he figured he could make a fresh batch for him and take some down for him since he had said he worked at the Magpie Emporium on Fridays.

It was nice to actually be cooking again, Guillermo needed to remember to occasionally tear himself away from the computer and video games and get in the habit of cooking and baking again.

In addition to the empanadas, he also decided to make some breakfast while he was at it and was making a fair amount of huevos rancheros in case anyone also decided to stop by and wanted something to eat.

"Oh something sure smells good in here!" Kurt announced as he suddenly appeared in the common room area in a small puff of smoke. "Could smell it all the way back in the room!"

“I don’t know about good but I am making breakfast - huevos rancheros and empanadas but those are still going to take a bit of time to finish cooking,” Guillermo explained with a grin as he pointed to the empanadas that were in the oven, “but the huevos rancheros is nearly done if you’d like some, I made a lot of them,” he added, “it’s been ages since I’ve done any cooking,”

"Huevos rancheros?" Kurt said thoughtfully, trying to remember what that was. "That's fried eggs right?"

"It is fried eggs," Guillermo nodded with a smile as he started to get some plates ready, "it also has tortillas and salsa with it," he added.

"Sounds delicious!" Kurt said. "I can help with clean up or anything if you need." Clean up was after all part of the cooking process and while it was always Kurt's least favorite part of cooking with his folks back home, it was better with friends and someone to talk to while doing it.

“I hope so, I fear I may be a bit rusty with my cooking skills,” Guillermo admitted, “I’m a bit out of practice but I wouldn’t say no to help for cleaning up, I made a bit of a mess with everything,” he looked around at all the different trays and utensils that he had used to make the dishes.

"Ah that's the sign of a good cook. At least, that is what Mutti and Vati always said" Kurt admitted with a grin. "I'd be happy to help with the clean up. But until then.... how have you been? Feels like even though we share a dorm we don't get the time to talk at times. Classes went well? Have you heard from your mum lately?"

"I got a bit caught up in video games," Guillermo admitted sheepishly as he started serving out the food, "lost track of time, especially with the break but I seem to be getting called up for Shenanigans on Wednesdays a lot lately so that's something different," he paused, "but classes ended up going well, I'm looking forward to seeing what classes they have next semester," he said, "and I have heard from my mama, she's been doing well, thanks, I try to talk to her once a week if I can." he told Kurt, "how about you? how have you been going lately?"

"It's going well" Kurt said with a smile. "Classes ended pretty well I think. I cant wait to see what they have next. The classes here are definitely a lot different than back home, but so far that has been a good thing! I heard from the Professor when classes ended and he said he's happy with my progress so far so that was good to hear. I also got a nice letter from Mutti and Vati a few days ago too so it was nice hearing from them. They want some more pictures so I think it might be time to dig out the camera and tour the island again. You are welcome to tag along if you want!" he added, giving his friend a smile.

Libby gave Kurt a small smile and a wave of her forkful of eggs when she spotted him. "Morning, Kurt," she offered, unable to help feeling a little pleased to see him there, too.

"Hey Libby! See you couldn't resist the temptation either huh?" he asked with a wink.

"I don't see how anyone could!" Libby remarked with her grin growing a bit more. "I'm pretty sure you could smell all this even from the roof! And there's nothing wrong with enjoying good food when it's available; I'm pretty sure it'd be far worse not to!"

"Very true. It IS rude to refuse food when it is offered to you" Kurt nodded in agreement. "Especially when it's been prepared and shared with good friends."

"And we have a lot of good friends," said Libby, who could almost count these good friends she was referring to without even having to use her other hand, but when you'd only ever had one friend before this, that was still a lot!, "who can make some really good food. I've been trying to guess who it might be cooking in here before I come in sometimes, but I guessed wrong this time...I'm glad it was Guillermo, though, I feel he hasn't been cooking as much lately."

"I have more friends here than I have ever had. That... is still taking some getting used to" Kurt admitted with a slightly shy smile. "Though it is probably a very good thing so many of us like to cook. We would be living off poptarts and cold cereal otherwise I think!"

After a moment's pause he continued.

"I got a letter from Mutti and Vati the other day. It was really nice to hear from them! They said they want more photos of the island because ... of course they do," Kurt added with a laugh.

The look Libby was giving Kurt at the mention of pop tarts and cold cereal was one that had absolutely no trouble conveying that such a thing was not going to happen. Not on her watch, anyway! But the chiding would be chased away by a pleased smile at the news, even if it did still cause that little twinge of envy inside of her.

"I know I'd want to know about everything if I were in their shoes," she agreed. "What kinds of pictures have you sent them so far?"

"Mostly pics of the different places around here. The school, the dorms, some of the shops around here. And of course the beach and lighthouse. They said they want pictures of my friends and, to use their words "these wonderful people you keep telling us about."

One of Libby's favorite things about the dorms was absolutely the fact that it seemed to have been constructed specifically to allow the aromas of someone cooking in the common room to travel throughout the whole hallway to let you know about it!

She paused a moment at the door, though, making her last minute guess on who it might have been that was cooking, before her head poked through to confirm and she let out a laugh before moving into the room proper.

"Ah-ha!" she declared. "Guillermo! Got it wrong again, but I'll get there eventually, I'm sure. What are you making?" Her attention went eagerly toward all his handiwork. "Did you need any help?"

“Libby Hi!” Guillermo grinned when he saw her, “I’m making Huevos Rancheros, it’s fried eggs with tortillas and salsa” he explained, “and I’m also making empanadas but they’ll take a bit longer to make,” he indicated to where he had them in the oven, “but I’m just about done making everything though, thank you anyway, but I have made a lot of everything though, so if you’re hungry there’s definitely a lot to go round,” he added.

"I'll definitely help with the eating," Libby assured him, with a smile, even though she had to admit, the combination sounded a little strange to her, but she happy to try new things. "And then maybe the clean-up. I think doing some dishes is the least I can do for being fed. Especially when it smells so amazing."

But she tilted her head thoughtfully at Guillermo for a moment. "How have you been, though?" she asked. "It feels like we haven't really had much chance to catch up lately, not even in class!"

Guillermo nodded, smiling at the offer for help, "I would definitely appreciate the helping cleaning up,” he told her as he started getting plates ready so that he could begin to dish out the food, he looked a little sheepish at that last part, “I get a bit distracted playing video games sometimes, except for Wednesday where it seems that lately I’ve ended up having to participate in the Shenanigans, so I’m not sure how that keeps happening but it’s different,” he added, “I tried to eat a whole pineapple the other day - I’ve never done that before,” he paused, “but I’ve been pretty good on the whole though, how have you been?”

"A little homesick," Libby offered, with an almost apologetic smile, but she figured she might as well get that right out there, front and center, so it didn't sneak up on her in this conversation like it had in the one with Kurt earlier that week, "but it's okay. The activities in the park have at least given me plenty of ideas to maybe bring back to the Littles, we always would spend time trying to think of fun games for them to play outside to get them out of the house more.

"I'm not sure I'd try to make any of them try to eat a whole pineapple, though," she added with a bit of a grin.

"Oh I'm sorry," Guillermo said softly, "is there anything I can do to help?" now that the plates were ready, he started to serve out generous portions of the food.

He looked a little sheepish at the last part, "that was definitely not the smartest idea I've ever had," he admitted, "it seemed like a good idea at the time,"

"After all," Libby allowed, "it's just fruit, right? Fruit's supposed to be good for you! But I guess that just goes to show, there really can be too much of a good thing!"

That part was the easier part, really, and Libby seemed to linger on that for a moment before softly shaking her head. "And company helps," she offered. "That's one nice thing about a school like this, is you're never too far away from some of that. It's just....hard to think of, sometimes, just how long we've actually been here already, you know? I've never been away from home for so long before."

Or, you know....ever.

“I've never been this far from home either, is weird to think how much time has passed since we first started,” Guillermo said as he thought back to when they had first come to the school, “that was in January, I can’t believe we’re actually in July now,” he shook his head at that.

He gave a small smile, “I’ll always be happy to keep you company,” he told her, “if you wanted, we could always watch a movie or something sometime, I mean the movies I bought with me are all mostly vampire related but we don’t have to watch those,” he assured her in case she wouldn’t like vampire movies.
