2nd Floor Common Room | Sunday Morning

There was weird stuff happening on the island again and Jim wasn't affected. He'd woken up as himself and he'd stayed himself and he was still currently himself while sprawled on one of the couches in the common room.

Considering classes were done for the term, he probably should have still been asleep instead of up this early and out of bed but he couldn't resist the allure of possibly seeing some people he knew acting like people they weren't. He was an opportunistic jackass that way. But, he didn't think he could be blamed. If people were gonna go all weird, he had the right to laugh at them if they did stupid stuff, right?

Right.

He figured he had to be properly awake to do anything though so he was eating some 'borrowed' cereal and watching some motivational on TV to get himself going. Except all the TV was doing was boring him so he hoped the cereal was really magic or something to make up for it.

"Interesting way to handle discipline," Jim decided with an amused nod. "Probably cheaper than hiring fifty security guards who failed out of high school and now feel powerful because they've got a plastic badge and a baton."

It was safe to say Jim had run into those kinds of guys before.

"There are places that actually use security like that?"

... It was safe to assume that Evan was a tiny bit sheltered.

"So, I've heard," he said, chuckling. "A lot of places where I come from have them."

And he was from the future! The future! They needed better security in some places.

"They're not very effective."

"No, I bet they aren't," Evan agreed, blinking. "At least around here there are plenty of people who actually know how to defend themselves. And back where I came from, even if Krakoa didn't get to anyone trying to storm the school, the building itself was full of security things, too."

And by 'security things,' Evan meant 'Danger Shop technology gone horribly wrong.'

"Did the school need that much security?" Jim wondered. "Was it attacked a lot?"

"All the time," Evan replied with a little shrug. "It's a school for mutant kids. And people... people are... people."

That was not exactly the most flattering use for the word, but it was accurate enough.

"Before I was a student there, I hear they had to re-build it from the ground up. A lot. A whole wing of it is made out of ice because of an attack before, too. For all the things that Fandom throws at us here, it's actually pretty safe, comparatively."

"Huh. Guess that place never got boring."

Though, this place didn't either what with having weekends like this every once in awhile.

"That why you came here? Safety?"

Ever see a kid with snow-white skin blush, Jim? The pink was plainly visible all the way to his ears.

"Bullies."

So, kind of! Just, not the more obvious sort of safety.

In other situations, Jim might have teased Evan about that but he held off in this situation.

"Happens to the best of us," he said instead. "I usually go for a swift kick in the junk if they really get at me."

"Which is probably more useful when half the bullies in the school actually have... um... junk."

There was a moment's pause, and then Evan blinked as though something had just dawned on him.

"Oh man. What if they're compensating for that?"

Evan was on to you, Rockslide and Glob Herman!!

"They wouldn't be the first to overcompensate for having nothing where it counts," Jim agreed with a laugh.

"And if they don't have junk, they usually have other weak spots. Find one of those and you can take anyone down. Noses, insteps, that kind of thing."

"One of them is made of rocks," Evan replied, after another moment of thought, "and another one is kind of like aggressive Jell-O. They... actually don't really have sensitive parts at all."

Well. Quire did. He was pretty normal-shaped. Except for his pink hair.

"Okay, the rock guy might be a little hard to find a weakness on," Jim said, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "Not a lot weakens rocks. And aside from a huge jackhammer, which people probably don't carry around, I can't think of anything that might break him down."

"Oh... um... like..." Evan held up one hand. And then promptly shifted that entire arm into a jackhammer.

Because shapeshifter, that's why.

"I don't know if I'd feel comfortable taking something like this to a classmate, though. Even if he is a jerk. That's kind of like assault with a weapon, isn't it?"

"Whoa," Jim said, eyes widening in actual surprise. "That's an impressive talent you got there, man. And people actually bullied you? I'd be afraid for my life if I did that."

"I don't like hurting people unless I really have to," Evan admitted, returning his arm to its usual shape. "So if people are just using words, I'm usually pretty good at ignoring them. But people here are way nicer, so it really isn't a problem. I prefer it here for that reason... People tease, sure, but they don't go out of their way to make other people feel awful."

"That's pretty noble of you," Jim said sincerely. "If it were me, I'd probably be changing my arm into all kind of things and embarrassing the crap out of anyone who tried to mess with me."

But, he could get where Evan was coming from. Evan was probably nicer than he was, yeah.

"At least you've got that there in case you need it? Not for bullies or anything, but other stuff."

"Unless, like in the maze, something turns it off," Evan agreed, nodding. "It's come in handy a lot. Mostly I just stretch, though, to reach things that are far away."

When the remote control batteries died, it wasn't a disaster!

"So, do you have limitations on what things you can change into?" Jim asked curiously. "Or does anything go?"

"I don't know," Evan admitted, scuffing his toe against the floor a little. "I've only ever really turned my hands into simple things, you know? Blades and things, mostly. Uh... And a mop, once, when the library flooded."

Evan had priorities, Jim. Priorities.

Chuckling, Jim shook his head. "You could call the school's janitor to do that? Pretty sure he gets paid to mop stuff up."

"But... the books!"

He couldn't wait for Fosse to lumber all the way to the library to take care of it! There had been books that needed saving!

"So, you saved the books, huh?" Jim smiled because it was kind of adorable in a nerdy way. "Hope the librarian gave you a pat on the back, at least, for saving the books."

"Just saving the books is its own reward," Evan stated, solemnly. And then he kind of laughed, ducking his head a little. "Which makes me sound like a huge dork, I know. But... Books are pretty great. I mean, there's a reason I work in the library, you know?"

"Hey, I've read a few books in my lifetime," Jim told him. "Books aren't too bad. I don't know if I'd go so far as to changing my arm into a mop just to clean up a mess to save them but I wouldn't go around burning them or anything stupid like that."
